    Queen Care

    Installing your new Queen

Best practice for installing new queens:

    • the hive you are installing your new queen in should be queenless
    • we recommend removing the old queen 24hrs prior to installation of the new queen if requeening, or letting splits sit queenless for 24hrs before installation
    • if you leave the hive queenless for longer than 24hrs you will need to go in and make sure they haven’t pulled any queen cells as this may cause them to reject your new queen
    • to install, we recommend using a queen cap over the candy end of the cage.
    • place the capped cage candy-end down and sandwiched between the top bars of two brood frames
    • leave cap on for 72 hrs before removing, the bees can then eat the candy and release her
    • this allows adequate time for the queen’s pheromones to be spread through the hive and encourages acceptance

Caring for Queens in Shipping Boxes:

    • we recommend installing queens immediately upon receipt
    • the attendants that have been packaged with the queens will feed and water them, as well as regulate temperature, but please take care not to place boxes in the hot sun or near cold air vents
    • if not being installed immediately, the next best option is to place the queens in a bank hive (a hive with no laying queen but adequate brood and resources to care for queens)
    • the second best option is to care for the queens and their attendants in the shipping box
    • queens are shipped with a supply of water and candy, but this reserve will only last a short time
    • using a syringe or spray bottle with a gentle setting, you can spray more water onto the floor of the shipping box (take care to avoid the queens)
    • you can also replenish feed by smearing some honey on the screens
    • again, we recommend installing the queens asap, as the attendant bees will eventually run out of resources and experience natural attrition
